Here is a picture of my first son Miles at about six weeks old with my Aunt Toni, a bona-fide baby whisperer. See how peacefully he is sleeping? That is the only way he would ever sleep. As they say (he's 14 now and almost as tall as me) the years are short .... but those days were very, very long.
Baby-wearing was a life saver ... but that's a topic for another post. If only I had known then what I know now about swaddling! Unfortunately for me, the first edition of The Happiest Baby on the Block wasn't to be published until a few months later (May 2002). As with many new parents, I tried putting him in a swaddle and he hated it ... so, I went on to the next thing (that also didn't work).
When I lived in Cleveland many years later, I was fortunate to teach Lamaze childbirth classes at University Hospitals, and my boss there had me take the Happiest Baby on the Block training so I'd be certified to teach those classes as well. It truly was a revelation! Learning about the fourth trimester and the magic of the Five S's made so much sense. Now, as a postpartum doula, I use these techniques all the time. All. The. Time.
I'll tell you right now you don't need to take a class to learn these techniques -- but you might want to buy the book. You can even just look up videos on YouTube (this one shows how to swaddle a well-mannered French bulldog). But for those fortunate few who also live in the Chicago suburbs, you can take my class at Hinsdale Hospital! The next two classes are scheduled for Tuesday, October 4 and Tuesday, December 6 at 7:00 -- you can register right here. All students get a DVD to take home with them, and I bring swaddles and (fake) babies to practice on.
